Buzzi Unicem

Buzzi Unicem SpA is an Italian company quoted on the Italian Stock Exchange, which produces cement, concrete and aggregates. Its residence is in Casale Monferrato (Alessandria Province), which was once known as the Italian Cement Capital and which is located about 90 km from Turin.


Buzzi Unicem is one of the largest cement producers in the world. It operates 35 cement plants, 467 concrete mixing plants and 24 sand pits and quarries worldwide (by the end of 2016). In 2016, production of cement in the group amounted to 25 million tons, ready-mixed concrete sales to 12 million m3 and aggregate sales to 7 million tons.


Buzzi Unicem SpA currently has - beside Italy - subsidiaries in Germany, Luxembourg, in the Nederlands, Poland, in the Ukraine, Russia, the United States, Mexico, Algeria as well as in the Czech and Slovak Republics and in Slovenia with almost 10,000 employees. 

History milestones

2017
Buzzi Unicem signed an agreement to buy 100% of the share capital of Cementizillo SpA. Zillo is a leading group focused on the cement and ready-mix concrete industry in the North-East of Italy. The firm operates with two cement plants and about 40 batching plants. In 2016, Zillo's cement and clinker sales came in at approximately 1.1 million tons and ready mix concrete volumes amounted to about 440,000 cubic meters.

Corporación Moctezuma officially inaugurated a second production line at the Apazapan cement plant. The addition of the new line now brings the total production capacity of the cement plant to 2.75 million tons/year of cement.

2016
The new “Nanodur E80” won the concrete products industry’s Innovation Award, which was presented to Dyckerhoff during the Concrete Days 2016 event in Ulm.

The Stockertown (U.S.) cement plant celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Unical took over the management of the ready-mix concrete business unit of Monvil Beton, which consists of 8 plants and is the largest company in the sector in Milan.

2015
Buzzi Unicem sold its 50% share of Addiment Italia to Sika.

Buzzi Unicem USA added three cement terminals to its distribution network (Rock Island, Illinois, and Grandville and Elmira, Michigan).

2014
Dyckerhoff celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Founded in 1864 by Wilhelm Gustav Dyckerhoff and sons Gustav and Rudolf, the company is now one of the pillars of our group.

Buzzi Unicem acquired a 100% interest in Uralcement. Located near Korkino approximately 40 km south of Chelyabinsk, the cement plant is a facility with a production capacity of 1.1 million tons/year and ample raw material reserves. This investment will increase Buzzi Unicem’s production capacity in Russia to approximately 4.5 million tons/year.


2013
Buzzi Unicem bought up minority shareholding interests in Dyckerhoff AG and became its 100% shareholder.

2010
Dyckerhoff took over the concrete business of its associates Sievert AG, consisting of 30 plants in Lower Saxony, North Rhine–Westphalia and Saxony–Anhalt.

New Apazapan plant in Veracruz, Mexico, was officially opened, with a capacity of 1.3 million tons per year, operated by our associate Corporación Moctezuma.


2009 - 2010
Persistence of the economic crisis led to a major decrease in financial results.

Projects started leading to expansion of activities in Selma (USA), Sukhoi Log (Russia), Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg) and Apazapan (Mexico).

Start up of new cement plant "River 7000" in St. Louis, MO.

2008
Successful acquisition of a 35% share of the registered capital in two cement plants in Algeria as part of privatisation.

2007
Buzzi Unicem celebrated its 100 th anniversary.

The project of development of a cement plant in the Orenburg area of Russia was launched (35 km from the border with Kazakhstan), with annual capacity of 2 million tons.


2004
Gaining of control over the registered capital of Dyckerhoff AG.

Buzzi Unicem entered into an agreement with SACCI for the purchase, through its 100% subsidiary Unical SpA, of the 30% minority stake in Betonval SpA, already a 70% Buzzi Unicem’s subsidiary active in the ready-mix concrete sector, mainly in Tuscany.


2003

2002
The Dyckerhoff family sold the 34% of the voting capital it held in Dyckerhoff AG. The purchasers were Buzzi Unicem for 10% and Banca IMI for 24%. Buzzi Unicem’s interest in Dyckerhoff AG thus increased to 44% of voting rights.

2001
As part of international diversification, cooperation began with the Dyckerhoff family. First Buzzi Unicem acquired 34% of the registered capital of Dyckerhoff AG.

Agreement with Laterlite SpA involving integration of the two groups in the sectors of expanded clay, light pre-mixes and insulating blocks.


2000
Acquisition of 77% of the shares of UNIMED, Cementeria del Mediterraneo SpA, which was created by the merger of Cementeria di Augusta SpA and Cementeria di Barletta SpA.

1999
In 1999, Fratelli Buzzi Cementi and Unicem SpA, another traditional Italian cement producer, merged and adopted the new name Buzzi Unicem SpA. The new company was listed on the Italian Stock Exchange and owned 13 cement plants in Italy, 5 in the United States of America and 2 in Mexico and about 180 concrete mixing plants in Italy.

1997
The associated company Corporación Moctezuma opened a new, very modern cement plant in Tepetzingo; two years after the plant is doubled, thus reaching the production capacity of 2.4 million tons/year.

A minority stake (30%) was acquired in Cementi Moccia, based in the surroundings of Naples.

Great part of Calcestruzzi SpA’s operations (Ravenna) acquired by Unicem.

'90s
Fratelli Buzzi Cementi gradually acquired a controlling interest in Cementi Riva, located in Riva del Garda (Trento).

1990
Establishment of the joint venture Addiment Italia (50% Fratelli Buzzi, 50% HeidelbergCement).

1987
Acquisition of Gabba & Miglietta, a company based in Casale Monferrato.

1980
A minority investment, Bargero, one of the most long-established and well-known cement enterprises in the area, became a member of the group.

1979
The company's expansion abroad began, with the joint venture Alamo Cement in San Antonio, Texas, and subsequently in Mexico via purchase of a stake in Corporación Moctezuma with a cement plant in Jiutepec (Cuernavaca) and operations in the ready-mix concrete sector (Mexico City, Acapulco).

Cementi Alta Italia, based in Casale Monferrato, joined the group.

1965
Based on a proposal by the Buzzi brothers, a cement plant was built in Robilante (Cuneo Province); in the same year, the group entered the ready-mix concrete sector first in Turin and Cuneo areas, then in Milan and Genoa.

1923
Second cement plant built in Casale Monferrato (Alessandria Province), approximately 14 km from Trino.

1907
Founding of Fratelli Buzzi SpA by brothers Pietro and Antonio Buzzi – first cement plant in Trino (Vercelli Province).
